I am a huge urban fantasy fan. Check out my Goodreads profile and you’ll see a huge list of the books I’ve devoured. But like many, my dream always was to write an urban fantasy series. Book one now exists.
I started writing SoulSighted back around 2019. It began with the title, Member of the Court. It evolved to Until the Break of Fae. And finally it became SoulSighted: Vampire Vexations.
It started off with me thinking about how Shakespeare was the first writer who named individual Fae, which made me ask the question, why? I also thought about how he said “kill all the lawyers first.” As an attorney myself, I let those two thoughts perculate. I enjoy books with the Seelie and Unseelie courts, but I didn’t want to write about royal courts and balls. And those thoughts merged together and an idea was formed. What if the Fae kept their power in the human world by becoming all the lawyers? What if the Seelie and Unseelie courts were now judicial courts? And what if the main character was a Fae prosecutor, who could no longer be an attorney, but instead was an investigator for the courts? And with that Alexander Hope was born.
I took a little break from SoulSighted to write Love & Worth for my wife, which was published in 2024 on our anniversary. While the book is dear to my heart because it’s written for my wife and has a kernal of truth from my daughter’s own life, my ultimate goal was to publish my urban fantasy series.
So I got back to it. Rewrote a lot of it based on what I had learned from writing Love & Worth. Then hired a professional editor, who identified some plot issues as well as other issues I needed to address. Hiring an editor is worth every penny.
The book then went out to beta readers, who brought up their own issues and as a result the book suddenly had a prologue.
What I have learned is that while writing is a solitary act, it really takes a village to write a good book. This included the help I received from my daughter and a good friend taking my pencil drawn cover and turning it into a presentable cover using PhotoShop. And yes, the software is worth it 100%. It makes creating the covers using Amazon and IngramSparks templates so much easier.
Finally, it came to formatting the book for publication. I used Word and Calibre for the first book. This time I shelled out the money and signed up for Atticus.io. It made it so easy to configure the ebook, paperback, and hard cover. Yes, it’s worth it.
Finally, the lessons learned from Love & Worth and some great advice on TikTok had me upload the ebook and paperback to Amazon first, then setup the paperback and hard cover on IngramSpark. From what I can tell it worked perfectly (fingers crossed).
The ebook is available as a pre-order for $1.99. All three formats come out on September 1, 2026. And I have a book signing scheduled for September 5, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at We Be Book’n in Monroe, WA!!!
